FNI Awarded VBCA Engagement by Alberta Transportation for Rail Safety

Transport Canada and Alberta Transportation are collaborating to engage FNI in the transformation of rail safety through the benefits of surrogate safety science. FNI will conduct a video-based conflict analysis (VBCA) study at two major rail crossings in Alberta. This will mark the first application of VBCA to rail crossing safety in Canada. Rail crossing fatalities are very rare events; identifying high risk sites from outcome data will always be problematic. Using surrogate data such as near-misses has the potential to enable a comprehensive and rigorous risk assessment framework. Over 50 people per year die in rail-related incidents in Canada - a number we are all striving to bring to zero.
